Characteristics of Frame Relay

• Frame Relay एक ऐसी Service जो Data Transport को Supports करती है।
• Frame Relay एक Connection less service है, जिसका अर्थ है कि नेटवर्क से गुजरने वाले प्रत्येक डेटा पैकेट में Address की जानकारी होती है।
• Frame Relay  एक ऐसी सेवा है जो 56 Kb से लेकर 25 Mbs तक की Speeds Provided  करता है।
• Frame Relay को Broadband ISDN service considered किया जाता हैं।
• Frame Relay variable size data packets को भी सपोर्ट करता है।
• Frame Relay  केवल physical और data link layer में काम करता है। इसलिए इसे इंटरनेट में आसानी से इस्तेमाल किया जा सकता है।
• Frame Relay केवल Error को Detect कर सकता है ( At Data Link Layer) लेकिन कोई Flow Control या Error Control नहीं।

Frame relay layers

Frame Relay में केवल दो लेयर होती है Physical Layer और Data Link Layer

Physical layer

• Frame relay ANSI Standards को Support करता है।
• Physical Layer के लिए कोई विशिष्ट प्रोटोकॉल Defined नहीं किया गया है। उपयोगकर्ता किसी भी प्रोटोकॉल का उपयोग कर सकता है जिसे ANSI  द्वारा मान्यता प्राप्त है।

Data link layer

• HDLC  का एक Simplified Version Data Link Layer पर फ्रेम रिले द्वारा नियोजित किया जाता है।
• एक Simplified Version  का उपयोग इसलिए किया जाता है क्योंकि फ़्रेम रिले में Flow Controlऔर Error Correction की आवश्यकता नहीं होती है।

Network में Frame relay  का उपयोग कई कारणों से किया जा रहा है। कुछ महत्वपूर्ण कारण इस प्रकार हैं आइए एक-एक करके इन बिंदुओं पर चर्चा करें।

1. Higher Data Rates

• यह Bursty Data  के Transfer  की अनुमति देता है।
• यदि physically distant के स्थानों पर स्थित LAN को एक दूसरे से जोड़ा जाना है तो ऐसा करने के लिए दो विकल्प उपलब्ध हैं।Interconnect them using the T lines और Interconnect using the frame relay
• The frame relay network can handle data rates upto T-3 transmission i.e. 44.376 Mbps.

2. Can handle bursty data:

• The data being sent from a source to destination is not of continuous/constant nature.
• Instead it is bursty in nature. That means a large amount of data (data burst) is sent suddenly, then for sometime there is very little or no data.
• The T-lines are not equipped to handle such bursty data because they offer a constant data rate.
• The frame relay can tackle this problem. It supports a minimum average data rate and can handle the bursty data.

3. Lower overheads:

• In frame relay network, there are no acknowledgements sent from the switches back to the sender.
• There is no intermediate error check. The error checking takes place only at the destination.
• The intermediate host/switch does not keep a copy of the packet forwarded to the next host/switch. This saves a lot of memory space of the hosts and switches.
• All this lead to reduced overheads.
